Wasa is the world's largest producer of crispbread, a staple of Scandinavian culinary tradition. Founded in 1919 by Karl Edvard Lundström in Skellefteå, Sweden, the company revolutionized the availability of high-fiber, long-lasting rye bread. The business eventually moved its primary operations to Filipstad, which remains a core production site today.
Since 1999, the brand has been part of the Barilla Group, an Italian family-owned food company. While the brand maintains its deep Swedish heritage and continues much of its production in Sweden, the ultimate ownership lies with Barilla in Italy. This transition has helped Wasa expand its global reach, exporting to over 40 countries while maintaining its commitment to traditional baking methods and environmental sustainability, having achieved CO2 neutrality in recent years.
