Varusteleka was founded in 2003 by Valtteri Lindholm in Helsinki, Finland. Originally starting as a small online army surplus store, it has grown into one of Europe’s largest and most recognized retailers of military and outdoor gear. The brand is well-known for its humorous, transparent, and often blunt marketing style, as well as its commitment to high-quality, functional equipment designed for extreme northern conditions.
While Varusteleka continues to sell military surplus from around the world, it has developed several highly successful house brands: Särmä (everyday outdoor clothing), Särmä TST (professional military-grade gear), Terävä (bushcraft knives and tools), and Jämä (recycled/upcycled products). A significant portion of their house-brand production is kept within Europe, particularly in Finland and the Baltic states, to ensure high quality and ethical manufacturing standards.
Varusteleka remains an independent, privately-owned company headquartered in Helsinki. It has established a cult following internationally, shipping products globally with a focus on durability and 'no-nonsense' utility. The company is often cited as a pioneer in the 'circular economy' within the tactical industry through their buy-back programs and focus on long-lasting equipment.
