Originally founded in Malle, Belgium, in 1979 by Frans Bogaerts, the company gained international recognition for its commitment to plant-based and mineral ingredients. The brand is famously associated with its "ecological factory" in Malle, which features a living green roof and was designed to reflect the company's sustainable ethos.

In 2012, Ecover merged with the American brand Method to form a global green cleaning leader. The combined business was then acquired in 2017 by S. C. Johnson & Son, a major American multinational consumer chemicals company. This acquisition brought Ecover into a portfolio alongside mainstream household names like Windex and Pledge. Despite the change in ownership, Ecover continues to operate with a focus on sustainable manufacturing and packaging, utilizing its longstanding Belgian facility as a primary hub for European production while benefitting from the global distribution network of its parent company.
