Ecover is a pioneering brand in the ecological cleaning market, originally established in 1979 in Malle, Belgium. Founded by scientists like Frans Bogaerts, the company gained fame for creating the world's first phosphate-free laundry detergent to protect aquatic life. They are further recognized for building a world-renowned 'ecological factory' in Malle in 1992, which features a grass-covered roof for natural insulation and was constructed using recycled materials.

In 2012, Ecover significantly expanded by acquiring the American eco-friendly brand Method, forming a combined group known as 'People Against Dirty.' This group was later acquired in 2017 by the American multinational household goods giant S. C. Johnson & Son. While Ecover maintains its core focus on plant-based and mineral-derived ingredients, its ownership by a large corporation that also produces traditional chemical cleaners has sparked discussions among some ethical consumer groups regarding animal testing policies at the parent company level. Today, most Ecover products sold in Europe continue to be manufactured at their heritage sites in Belgium and France.
