KitKat is a globally recognized chocolate-covered wafer bar that has become a staple in the confectionery world. Originally launched as 'Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp' in 1935, it was later renamed KitKat in 1937. The 'Chunky' variant, which features a thicker bar with larger layers, was first introduced in 1999 to cater to those seeking a more substantial snack.
Starting its life in York, United Kingdom, the brand saw a major shift in 1988 when the original creator, Rowntree's, was acquired by the Swiss multinational Nestlé. Today, KitKat is produced in numerous factories across the globe, including major facilities in the UK, Bulgaria, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia. Interestingly, due to a long-standing licensing agreement that predates the Nestlé acquisition, KitKat is manufactured and distributed in the United States by The Hershey Company, while Nestlé controls the brand everywhere else.
As of 2026 and beyond, Nestlé continues to be the ultimate owner and global brand manager of KitKat, driving innovation with a focus on sustainable cocoa sourcing through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan. The brand remains one of the world's most popular chocolate snacks, famous for its 'Have a break, have a KitKat' slogan.
