Wasa is the world's leading producer of crispbread, a position it has held for decades. The brand was founded in 1919 by Karl Edvard Lundström in Skellefteå, Sweden, as AB Skellefteå Spisbrödsfabrik. The name 'Wasa' was adopted in tribute to the Swedish King Gustav Vasa, whose image once appeared on the early packaging. The brand grew rapidly and moved its main operations to Filipstad in the 1930s.

Since 1999, Wasa has been part of the Barilla Group, the Italian pasta and bakery giant. Today, Wasa continues to uphold its heritage of using simple ingredients like rye flour and salt. The production of Wasa crispbread primarily takes place at two state-of-the-art bakeries: the original Swedish facility in Filipstad and another in Celle, Germany. The brand has also gained recognition for its commitment to sustainability, becoming 100% CO2 compensated as part of Barilla's environmental initiatives.
