Wasa is an iconic brand that traces its beginnings back to 1919 in Skellefteå, Sweden, where Karl Edvard Lundström founded the company to specialize in crispbread. The name 'Wasa' pays homage to King Gustav Vasa, a symbol of Swedish national identity. While the brand remains deeply rooted in Scandinavian culinary tradition, its operations and ownership have evolved significantly over the past century.
Today, Wasa is the largest manufacturer of crispbread worldwide. Although its heritage is Swedish, a significant portion of its modern production, particularly for gluten-free and specialty lines, occurs in Germany (notably in Celle). The brand was acquired by the Italian multinational food giant Barilla Group in 1999. Under Barilla's ownership, the brand has expanded its global reach while maintaining its commitment to traditional baking methods and environmental sustainability.
