LEGO is the world's leading manufacturer of construction toys, famous for its interlocking plastic bricks. Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen in Billund, Denmark, the brand name is a contraction of the Danish words 'Leg Godt,' meaning 'Play Well.' While originally a producer of wooden toys, the company pivoted to plastic bricks in 1947 and patented the modern brick design in 1958.
Today, LEGO remains a privately held, family-owned company. It is primarily owned by KIRKBI A/S (75%), the investment holding company of the Kristiansen family, and the LEGO Foundation (25%). The company maintains its global headquarters in Billund, Denmark. Manufacturing is a global operation with major moulding and production facilities located in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, and the Czech Republic. To meet growing demand, the company has recently expanded its footprint with a new carbon-neutral factory in Virginia, USA, and another facility in Vietnam.
As of 2026, the LEGO Group continues to be led by the fourth generation of the founder's family. The company recently completed a strategic relocation of its Americas headquarters from Enfield, Connecticut, to a new state-of-the-art office in Boston, Massachusetts, to better tap into regional innovation and talent pools.
