Estrella Cheese Balls Origin and History

Estrella is one of Sweden's most iconic snack brands, with a history dating back to 1946 when Algot Turesson returned from the United States and registered the trademark. The name 'Estrella' means 'star' in Spanish. The production of the famous cheese balls (ostbågar) began in the Gothenburg factory, which remains the central hub for the brand's chip and snack manufacturing today.

Manufacturing and Ownership

While Estrella started as a local Swedish company, its ownership has transitioned through several international hands over the decades. It was previously owned by Kraft Foods and later the Norwegian conglomerate Orkla (under the OLW-Estrella umbrella). However, in 2012, Estrella was acquired by Intersnack Group. Today, the products are primarily manufactured in the Estrella factory in Angered, outside of Gothenburg, ensuring that they maintain the classic Swedish flavor profile that has been a staple of Swedish weekend snacks for generations.
