The brand was originally created by Rowntree's in the United Kingdom in 1935. Today, the trademark is owned by Nestlé globally, except in the United States where it is licensed to the Hershey Company.

Manufacturing for the cereal version is often handled through Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW), a joint venture between Nestlé and General Mills founded in 1991. Production takes place in various facilities across Europe and other regions to supply local markets. Nestlé remains the ultimate owner of the brand name outside the US, managing its expansion into the cereal category.
