In 2022, the American tobacco giant Philip Morris International (PMI) launched a takeover bid for Swedish Match, which was finalized in early 2023. Today, General is owned by Philip Morris International, marking a shift from Swedish independent ownership to becoming part of a leading global tobacco conglomerate based in the United States.
