LU Petit Écolier is one of the most iconic brands in the world of French biscuits. The brand, LU (Lefèvre-Utile), was founded in 1846 by Jean-Romain Lefèvre and Pauline-Isabelle Utile in Nantes, France. The Petit Écolier (Little Schoolboy) biscuit, featuring a distinctive chocolate plate with an embossed figure of a school child atop a butter biscuit, was created by Louis Lefèvre-Utile in 1897. Today, these premium biscuits are primarily manufactured in France, maintaining their heritage of quality and craftsmanship.
While the brand maintains its French identity, the corporate ownership has transitioned over the decades. LU was previously a flagship brand of the French food giant Danone. However, in 2007, Danone sold its global biscuit business to the American multinational Mondelez International (formerly Kraft Foods). Mondelez remains the ultimate owner as of 2024 and beyond, managing LU as part of its global snack portfolio while preserving its traditional French production roots.
