LU, which stands for Lefèvre-Utile, is an iconic French biscuit brand founded in Nantes, France, in 1846 by Jean-Romain Lefèvre and Pauline-Isabelle Utile. The brand is celebrated for its rich heritage and the creation of classic products like the Petit-Beurre. The Figolu biscuit, a fig-filled shortbread, is one of its most recognizable regional specialties.
Historically, LU was part of the Danone Group's biscuit division. However, in 2007, it was acquired by Kraft Foods, which later spun off its snack food business into Mondelēz International in 2012. Today, Mondelēz International remains the ultimate owner of the brand. While LU has deep roots in France, its products are manufactured in various facilities across Europe to meet global demand, though several key bakeries continue to operate within French territory.
