Founded in 1976 by Olivier Baussan, the brand originated in the Provence region of France, where Baussan began distilling rosemary essential oil and selling it at local markets.

The production for L'Occitane's core ranges, including the iconic Shea Butter line shown here, remains primarily centered in Manosque, France. While the company has expanded globally and acquired other brands (like Elemis and Sol de Janeiro), the L'Occitane brand itself is tightly controlled by the L'Occitane Group, which is headquartered in Luxembourg and Geneva, Switzerland, though its heart and heritage are firmly rooted in French botanical traditions. Reinold Geiger, the long-term chairman, significantly expanded the brand's global footprint during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
