Wasa is the world's largest producer of crispbread, maintaining a rich history that spans over a century. The brand was founded in 1919 by Karl Edvard Lundström in Skellefteå, Sweden, under the original name Skellefteå Spisbrödfabrik. The name 'Wasa' was later adopted as a tribute to King Gustav Vasa, a symbol of Swedish heritage and strength.

While the brand's roots are firmly planted in Sweden, where its main production facility operates in Filipstad, Wasa has expanded its manufacturing footprint to include a significant bakery in Celle, Germany. This dual-location strategy allows the brand to efficiently serve its global markets, spanning over 40 countries across Europe and North America.

In 1999, the brand transitioned from its previous owner, Novartis, to become a core part of the Barilla Group, a renowned Italian family-owned food conglomerate. Under Barilla's ownership, Wasa has evolved to emphasize health and environmental sustainability, recently achieving 100% carbon neutrality in its operations. Despite being part of an Italian group, Wasa continues to be managed through its Swedish subsidiary, Barilla Sverige AB, ensuring its traditional Scandinavian quality and identity remain intact.
