The name itself is believed to be derived from the Kit-Cat Club, an 18th-century political and literary society in London.

In 1988, the Swiss multinational Nestlé acquired Rowntree's, taking over the global production and distribution of KitKat. Today, Nestlé manufactures KitKat in many countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Bulgaria, and the United Arab Emirates, to serve different regional markets. Notably, in the United States, the brand is produced under license by The Hershey Company due to a long-standing agreement established before Nestlé's acquisition.

The KitKat Hazelnut variant is a popular extension of the classic line, featuring the traditional crispy wafer and milk chocolate enhanced with hazelnut praline or flavoring.
