L’Occitane en Provence, often simply referred to as L’Occitane, is a prestigious French beauty brand founded in 1976 by Olivier Baussan. The brand's identity is deeply rooted in the traditions and natural ingredients of Provence, France. The Shea Butter Hand Cream (Crème Mains Karité) is one of its most iconic products, recognized globally for its high concentration of shea butter and its distinctive aluminum tube packaging, which was inspired by the paint tubes used by the founder's artist mother.

While the shea butter itself is ethically sourced from women's cooperatives in Burkina Faso and Ghana through fair-trade partnerships that date back to the 1980s, the final product is manufactured in France. Specifically, the majority of L’Occitane's development and production takes place at its primary facility in Manosque, located in the heart of Provence.

As of 2026, the brand is owned by L'Occitane Groupe S.A., which is headquartered in Luxembourg. The group was taken private in 2024 by its long-time chairman and controlling shareholder, Austrian billionaire Reinold Geiger, in a major deal supported by financial entities such as Blackstone and Goldman Sachs. Following its delisting from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the company remains under the private leadership of the L'Occitane Group, which also manages other notable brands like Elemis and Sol de Janeiro.
