Wasa is one of the world's most recognized brands for crispbread, founded in Sweden in 1919 by Karl Edvard Lundström. Originally known for its simple rye-based breads, it has grown into a global leader in the healthy snack category. The brand was established in Skellefteå and later moved its main production to Filipstad, Sweden, which remains a key facility today along with operations in Celle, Germany.
While Wasa remains deeply rooted in Swedish tradition, the brand's ownership has transitioned through several major corporations. It was acquired by the Swiss company Sandoz in 1982 and then by the Norwegian conglomerate Orkla. In 1999, Wasa was purchased by the Italian food giant Barilla Group. Today, Barilla continues to own and manage the brand, maintaining its heritage while distributing its products to over 40 countries.
