Ecover is a pioneering eco-friendly brand that has significantly influenced the green cleaning sector since its inception. Founded in 1979 in Malle, Belgium, by Frans Bogaerts, the company was born from a desire to create phosphate-free cleaning products that would not harm aquatic life. This commitment to sustainability led to the construction of the world's first "ecological factory" in Malle in 1992, which remains a primary site for its European production. In addition to its Belgian operations, the brand also utilizes facilities in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France.

Over the years, the brand's ownership has evolved from its humble beginnings as a small Belgian entity. After an acquisition of the American brand Method in 2012 to form the "People Against Dirty" group, Ecover and Method were both acquired in late 2017 by the American multinational corporate giant S. C. Johnson & Son. This acquisition brought the eco-pioneer into a portfolio that includes major global brands such as Glade, Mr Muscle, and Duck. Despite the change in ultimate ownership to a large US-based corporation, Ecover continues to emphasize its heritage of plant-based ingredients and biodegradable formulas.
