KitKat is a chocolate-covered wafer bar confection created by Rowntree's of York, United Kingdom, and is now produced globally by Nestlé. The product was first launched in 1935 as 'Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp' and rebranded as KitKat in 1937. It is famously known for its 'Have a break, have a KitKat' slogan.
While Nestlé owns the global rights and manufactures the product in numerous facilities across Europe, Asia, and Australia, it is produced under license by the Hershey Company in the United States. This unique split ownership dates back to a licensing agreement made between Rowntree and Hershey before Nestlé acquired Rowntree in 1988.
