Ecover is a pioneering brand in the ecological cleaning industry, founded in 1979 in Belgium by Frans Bogaerts. The brand was established with the mission to create phosphate-free cleaning products that minimize environmental harm, a goal it has pursued for over four decades. Ecover is well-known for building the world's first 'ecological factory' in Malle, Belgium, in 1992, which features a living green roof and sustainable construction materials.
In 2012, Ecover expanded its reach by acquiring the American brand Method, forming a group often referred to as 'People Against Dirty.' However, in late 2017, the brand underwent a significant ownership change when it was acquired by the American multinational consumer goods giant, S. C. Johnson & Son. While Ecover maintains its Belgian roots and continues to operate its flagship zero-waste certified manufacturing facility in Malle, it is now part of a global portfolio that includes mainstream brands like Windex and Glade. This acquisition has sparked debate among ethical consumers regarding the brand's continued status as a truly independent eco-alternative.
