Persil is one of the world's most recognized laundry detergent brands, originally developed in Germany in 1907 by Henkel. The name is derived from its two main chemical components: perborate and silicate. It was revolutionary at the time for being the first self-acting detergent, eliminating the need for hard scrubbing during laundry.
Today, the brand has a unique ownership structure. While Henkel owns and manufactures Persil in most of the world, including its home market of Germany (where this advertisement originates), Unilever holds the rights to manufacture and market the brand in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Latin America, China, and certain other regions. In the German market shown, production typically occurs at Henkel's massive industrial facilities in Düsseldorf or other European sites to serve the local demand for its powder and liquid disc formats.
