LEGO is an iconic global brand synonymous with creative play and modular construction. Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund, Denmark, the brand evolved from humble beginnings as a producer of high-quality wooden toys to a pioneer in plastic injection molding after World War II. The modern LEGO brick design, featuring its unique stud-and-tube interlocking system, was patented in 1958 and remains the foundation of all LEGO products today.

Manufacturing is a globally distributed operation designed to keep production close to major markets. Primary molding facilities are located in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, and Vietnam. The company also operates a major packing and decoration facility in the Czech Republic. To further its commitment to sustainability and supply chain resilience, LEGO recently expanded its footprint with a massive carbon-neutral factory in Vietnam (opened in 2025) and a similar facility in Virginia, USA, aimed at serving the Americas.

Despite its massive global scale, LEGO remains a private, family-owned enterprise. It is primarily owned by the Kirk Kristiansen family through their investment holding company, KIRKBI A/S, which holds a 75% stake, while the LEGO Foundation owns the remaining 25%. This ownership structure ensures the brand's long-term focus on its mission to 'inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow' without the pressures of public market fluctuations.
