Puma is a globally recognized sportswear brand with roots dating back to the late 1920s in Germany. The brand's history is famously tied to the Rudolf Dassler, who founded Puma in 1948 following a split with his brother, Adolf Dassler, who went on to create Adidas. This rivalry established Herzogenaurach, Germany, as a global hub for the footwear industry.
Today, Puma operates as a publicly traded company known as Puma SE. Its manufacturing network is decentralized, with the vast majority of its products being produced in Asia. Key manufacturing hubs include Vietnam, China, Cambodia, and Bangladesh. While the design and corporate leadership remain in Germany, the physical assembly of goods is distributed globally to optimize supply chain logistics.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned significantly over decades. For a period, the French luxury group Kering held a majority stake. In recent years, Kering distributed its shares to its own shareholders, making Puma an independent public company once again. Currently, the Artemis Group (the holding company of the Pinault family) remains a significant shareholder, though Puma SE operates as the ultimate executive owner of the brand.
