Freeway is a private-label brand of carbonated soft drinks specifically developed for the German global discount supermarket chain Lidl. The brand was created to provide high-quality alternatives to major international soda brands at a significantly lower price point, maintaining a strong presence in European markets including Sweden, Germany, and the UK.
While the brand originated in Germany alongside its parent company, production is decentralized to minimize logistics costs and environmental impact. Manufacturing typically occurs in the local markets where the products are sold or in large regional bottling hubs across Europe. In Sweden, Freeway products are often produced by regional partners or imported from specialized production facilities in Germany or neighboring EU countries.
Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG remained the ultimate owner and operator of the brand. As a private label, Freeway is sold exclusively through Lidl stores. The brand is managed by the Schwarz Gruppe, a massive retail conglomerate that also owns the Kaufland hypermarket chain, making it one of the largest retailers in the world.
