Brand Origin and Manufacturing
Mentadent is a toothpaste brand that originated in the United Kingdom in the early 1980s, introduced by Unilever. The brand is known for its unique dual-chamber pump dispenser, which separates two ingredients until dispensed, allowing them to react in the mouth to release oxygen bubbles aimed at cleaning, whitening, and freshening the mouth. This innovative design was patented by Hans Schaeffer, who later sold the patent. Mentadent's product line includes varieties such as Mentadent P, Mentadent Sensitive, and Mentadent SR.
Ownership and Distribution
In 2003, Unilever sold the rights to the Mentadent brand in the United States and Canada to Church & Dwight Company. Church & Dwight operated the brand as a subsidiary of Arm & Hammer until it discontinued sales in 2016. Despite this, Unilever continues to market and sell Mentadent-branded products in other international markets. As of 2024, various Mentadent toothpastes are available in the UK market, including retailers like Asda.
