Richardson initially named his company the Vick Family Remedies Company, choosing the name 'Vick' to honor his brother-in-law, Dr. Joshua Vick.

For many years, the brand was owned by Richardson-Vicks Inc., which was acquired by the American multinational consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1985.
