KitKat was originally created by Rowntree's in York, United Kingdom, in 1935 as 'Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp'. The brand was later renamed KitKat in 1937. Today, it is one of the most recognized chocolate brands globally, famous for its 'Have a break, have a KitKat' slogan.
Ownership of the brand is unique due to a licensing agreement. In 1988, the Swiss multinational Nestlé acquired Rowntree's and became the global owner of the brand. However, in the United States, KitKat is produced under license by The Hershey Company. Therefore, while Nestlé owns and manufactures KitKat in most of the world, Hershey holds the rights to the brand in the American market.
Manufacturing takes place in various locations around the world depending on the market, including large facilities in the UK, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Australia, and the United States (via Hershey).
