Flora was originally introduced in the United Kingdom in the 1960s by Unilever (specifically its Van den Berghs subsidiary) as a plant-based spread lower in saturated fats than traditional butter. Over the decades, Flora expanded throughout Europe and internationally, becoming one of the most recognizable margarine and plant-based spread brands in countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, and Australia.
In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads business to the global investment firm KKR for €6.825 billion, establishing the dedicated plant-based food company Upfield. In 2024, Upfield announced a rebranding of the global group to Flora Food Group, highlighting its flagship brand. Flora Food Group is headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and manages local distribution in Spain through Flora Food Spain S.L.U. (formerly Upfield España S.L.U.).
Flora products sold across the European Union and Spain are manufactured primarily in European production facilities located in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland, depending on product line and distribution logistics.
