Fresh Chayote (Sechium edule)

Chayote (Sechium edule), also known as christophene, mirliton, or chocho, is an edible gourd belonging to the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. The plant is native to Mesoamerica, predominantly Mexico and Central America, where it has been cultivated since pre-Columbian times.

Today, chayote is grown and harvested across tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and parts of Asia. As an unbranded agricultural commodity, fresh chayote sold in markets and greengrocers across the United Kingdom is typically imported from commercial growers in Central America or the Caribbean without belonging to a single commercial brand or corporate entity.
