Kruidvat was founded in 1975 in Hilversum, the Netherlands, by Dick Siebrand and Ed During. It quickly became the market leader in the Dutch drugstore sector by focusing on affordability and a wide range of personal care and household items. In 2002, Kruidvat Holding was acquired by the A.S. Watson Group, a Hong Kong-based international retail giant, which significantly expanded its reach across the Benelux region.

While Kruidvat is a Dutch brand, its private-label products like Ossengal Zeep are often manufactured by specialized third-party producers across Europe to meet the chain's scale. The ultimate ownership lies with CK Hutchison Holdings, which operates through its retail arm, A.S. Watson, managing thousands of stores globally.
