The brand's name, translating to "Romeo and Juliet," was inspired by Shakespeare's famous play. Initially, Romeo y Julieta gained recognition for its quality, winning gold medals at various international exhibitions between 1885 and 1900. In 1903, the brand was acquired by José "Pepin" Rodríguez Fernández, former head of the Cabañas factory in Havana, through his firm Rodríguez, Argüelles y Cía. This acquisition marked a significant expansion, with the brand becoming a favorite among cigar enthusiasts worldwide. In 1959, following the Cuban Revolution, the tobacco industry was nationalized, leading to the establishment of two versions of the brand: one produced in Cuba and another in the Dominican Republic. The Cuban version is produced by Habanos S.A., while the Dominican version is produced by Altadis, a subsidiary of Imperial Brands. The Romeo y Julieta Club 20 cigars are machine-made, offering a mild to medium-bodied smoke, and are packaged in boxes of 20.
