Stockfish Chess Engine

Stockfish is a leading free and open-source UCI chess engine, widely considered one of the strongest in the world. It originated from the Glaurung engine created by Tord Romstad. In 2008, Romstad, along with Marco Costalba and Joona Kiiski, developed Stockfish to be a more powerful, multi-platform version of its predecessor. Because it is open-source software, its development is decentralized and occurs globally via a massive community of contributors rather than a single manufacturing facility.

Ownership of Stockfish is unique compared to commercial products; it is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL). While the original developers established the project, it is now maintained by the Stockfish community. There is no ultimate corporate owner in the traditional sense, as the project is a collaborative effort aimed at providing free high-level chess analysis to the public.
