Volvo Cars is a premium automotive brand originally founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1927 as a subsidiary of the ball bearing manufacturer SKF. The brand has built a global reputation centered on safety innovations, Scandinavian design, and environmental sustainability. For much of its history, it was a Swedish-owned entity until it was acquired by Ford Motor Company in 1999 as part of their Premier Automotive Group.
In 2010, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when it was acquired by the Chinese automotive giant Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Today, Volvo operates as a global company with major manufacturing facilities in Sweden, Belgium, China, and the United States. While its corporate headquarters and core design and engineering functions remain in Gothenburg, Sweden, its strategic direction and financial backing come from its parent company in China, making it a unique blend of European heritage and global manufacturing scale.
