Continente whole bean coffee (Café em grão Continente) is a private-label grocery product sold across Portugal in Continente hypermarkets and supermarkets. The Continente brand was established in Portugal in 1985 when the country's first hypermarket opened in Matosinhos under a joint partnership with French retailer Carrefour, before becoming wholly Portuguese-owned.
The brand is owned and managed by MC Sonae (formerly Sonae MC), the food retail division of Sonae SGPS, S.A., one of Portugal's largest multinational business groups headquartered in Maia, Portugal. While raw coffee beans are imported from coffee-producing nations such as Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, or Uganda, the roasting, blending, and packaging of Continente's whole bean coffee are primarily carried out by specialized Portuguese roasting partners.
Note that while 'Continente' was originally associated with the French Promodès/Carrefour hypermarket chain in southern Europe, the Portuguese retail network and trademark have operated fully independently under Sonae's sole ownership for decades.
