Philadelphia is one of the world's most famous cream cheese brands. Created in the United States in 1872 by William Lawrence in Chester, New York, it was branded "Philadelphia" by distributor Alvah Reynolds to capitalize on the city's reputation at the time for producing high-quality dairy foods.
Following corporate splits (notably Kraft Foods splitting into Kraft and Mondelēz International in 2012), the global rights to the Philadelphia brand were divided. In North America (US and Canada), Philadelphia is owned by The Kraft Heinz Company. However, in Europe—including Denmark—and most of the rest of the world, the Philadelphia brand is owned and marketed by Mondelēz International. Products sold in the Nordic markets are primarily manufactured at Mondelēz dairy facilities in Germany (notably in Fallingbostel).
