Universal Media Disc (UMD) is a discontinued optical disc physical medium developed by Sony specifically for use with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld game console. First released in late 2004 in Japan and throughout 2005 worldwide, UMD discs were manufactured by Sony DADC and authorized replication facilities across Japan, Austria, and other international plants to distribute video games and movies.
The featured assortment includes video games such as LocoRoco 2, Archer MacLean's Mercury, Tales of Eternia, and a PSP Demo Disc. The overall hardware and physical media platform format is owned and managed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, a major multinational video game and digital entertainment subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan.
