The PlayStation Portable (commonly known as the PSP) is a handheld game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment (now Sony Interactive Entertainment). First released in Japan in late 2004 and subsequently in North America and Europe in 2005, the PSP was the first handheld installment in the renowned PlayStation line of consoles.
The PSP was developed in Japan by Sony's gaming division. Manufacturing was largely carried out in contract assembly plants in China (such as Foxconn) as well as facilities in Japan.
Sony Interactive Entertainment remains fully owned by Sony Group Corporation, a multinational conglomerate headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan.
