Dentyne is a historic chewing gum brand renowned for its breath-freshening and oral hygiene heritage. Originally created in New York City in 1899 by druggist Franklin V. Canning, the name 'Dentyne' was cleverly derived as a portmanteau of 'dental' and 'hygiene'. It gained wide acclaim as one of the first commercially successful chewing gums marketed explicitly to aid dental health and freshen breath.
Throughout the twentieth century, Dentyne underwent various corporate transitions, moving through American Chicle, Warner-Lambert, and eventually Cadbury Schweppes in the early 2000s. In 2010, multinational food and beverage giant Kraft Foods acquired Cadbury, subsequently spinning off its global confectionery operations into Mondelēz International in 2012.
In late 2023, Mondelēz International completed the sale of its developed-market gum business in the United States, Canada, and Europe—including iconic brands like Dentyne, Trident, Bubbaloo, and Chiclets—to the European confectionery company Perfetti Van Melle. Today, Perfetti Van Melle, headquartered in Schiphol, Netherlands, is the ultimate owner overseeing production and distribution across European and North American markets.
