Created by Loblaw Companies Limited during a period of high inflation, the store format pioneered extreme no-frills, low-cost grocery retail in Canada by heavily promoting no name private-label products, requiring customers to pack their own groceries, and stripping away costly store fixtures.

Today, No Frills operates more than 250 franchised locations across nine Canadian provinces. The private-label and brand-name merchandise retailed at No Frills locations is sourced from Canada and multiple countries worldwide depending on the specific product category.

The brand is owned and operated by Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada's largest food retailer, whose majority shareholder is George Weston Limited, a Canadian public holding company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.
