Nordsee was founded in 1896 in Bremerhaven, Germany, as the Deutsche Dampffischerei-Gesellschaft NORDSEE by a group of Bremen shipowners and merchants. Over more than a century, it expanded from fishing operations and wholesale into Europe's largest quick-service seafood restaurant chain as well as a prominent retail brand sold in supermarkets across DACH countries.
In 2018, the quick-service seafood chain Nordsee GmbH was acquired by the investment firm Kharis Capital (via its vehicle KC CEE Fish Holdings / QSR platform). Retail products branded as 'Nordsee' sold in supermarkets (such as smoked fish, pickled herring, and seafood salads) are licensed or produced under long-standing partnerships, predominantly involving major German fish processing companies such as the Homann / Theo Müller group or specialized processors located in northern Germany and Poland.
These Nordic-style matjes fillets are typically prepared and packaged in Germany or neighboring EU coastal nations (such as Poland or the Netherlands) using sustainably caught Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus).
