illy, legally known as illycaffè S.p.A., is a renowned Italian coffee company that has become a global symbol of espresso culture. Founded in 1933 by Francesco Illy in the port city of Trieste, Italy, the brand revolutionized the industry with inventions such as the illetta—the precursor to the modern espresso machine—and the pressurized packaging system that preserves the aroma and freshness of coffee beans during shipping.
To this day, illy maintains its production heart in Trieste, Italy, where it roasts and packages its signature blend composed of nine different Arabica coffee beans sourced from the best growers worldwide. Unlike many global beverage giants, illy has remained largely under the control of the Illy family for generations, ensuring a consistent focus on quality, sustainability, and the 'Made in Italy' heritage.
While the Illy family remains the majority stakeholder and central to the brand's identity, the company opened its capital to outside investment recently to fuel global expansion. The private equity firm Rhone Capital holds a minority stake, but the ultimate ownership and strategic direction remain firmly rooted in Italy under the leadership of the Illy family. The brand is celebrated for its commitment to the arts and its University of Coffee, which trains baristas and growers globally.
