LU, which stands for Lefèvre-Utile, is an iconic French brand of biscuits that dates back to 1846. The name was formed by the initials of Jean-Romain Lefèvre and his wife, Pauline-Isabelle Utile, who started a small bakery in Nantes, France. The brand became world-famous for its 'Petit-Beurre' biscuit, designed with 52 teeth to represent the weeks of the year and four corners to represent the seasons.
Over the decades, LU evolved from a family bakery into a global powerhouse. In the late 20th century, it became part of the Danone Group before being acquired by Kraft Foods in 2007. Following the corporate split of Kraft Foods in 2012, LU became a flagship brand under Mondelēz International, which remains the ultimate owner today. While manufacturing is still heavily centered in France, Mondelēz produces LU products in various facilities across Europe and globally to meet demand.
