A&W Restaurants is an iconic American fast-food chain, famously known for its signature draft root beer and nostalgic dining atmosphere. Founded in 1919 by Roy W. Allen and Frank Wright in Lodi, California, the brand began as a humble roadside stand to celebrate returning World War I veterans. It quickly expanded, becoming one of the first franchised restaurant chains in the United States and eventually spreading its reach across the globe.

Throughout its century-long history, the brand has undergone several ownership changes. In the late 20th century, it was acquired by Yum! Brands (then Triarc Companies), which paired it with other chains like Long John Silver's. However, in 2011, a group of dedicated A&W franchisees formed A Great American Brand, LLC and purchased the chain, returning the brand to its roots under franchisee leadership. This shift focused on revitalizing the brand's heritage and quality.

Today, A&W operates hundreds of locations worldwide, particularly in the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia. While the brand is unified by its history, the Canadian division (A&W Food Services of Canada Inc.) operates completely independently of the U.S. and international operations.
