Apple Maps is the default web mapping service of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS. Developed by Apple Inc., it provides directions and estimated times of arrival for automobile, pedestrian, and public transportation navigation. Originally launched in 2012 as a replacement for Google Maps on Apple devices, the service has grown to include features like Street View-style imagery (Look Around), indoor maps for airports and malls, and detailed 3D landmarks.
Apple Maps was born out of Apple's desire to control the user experience on its flagship hardware. The technology was built upon the foundations of several acquisitions, including Placebase, Poly9, and C3 Technologies. Since its initial release, Apple has transitioned from using third-party data providers like TomTom and OpenStreetMap to its own proprietary data collection methods, utilizing a fleet of vehicles and aircraft to map the world in high definition.
The software is an integral part of the Apple ecosystem. As a digital product, it is developed primarily at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California. It is owned and maintained by Apple Inc., which manages the global infrastructure required to serve millions of users daily across every continent. The product remains a core differentiator for the iPhone, focusing heavily on user privacy compared to other mapping competitors.
