MapQuest is a pioneer in the digital mapping space, originally launched as a web service in 1996. It was developed by Geosystems Global Corporation, a company that traced its roots back to the cartographic division of R.R. Donnelley & Sons. The service revolutionized how people navigated by providing online turn-by-turn directions long before the ubiquity of smartphones.

Over the decades, MapQuest underwent several ownership changes, most notably being acquired by AOL in 1999 during the height of the dot-com era. Today, it operates as a specialized navigation tool providing maps, directions, and location-based business information. While it faced stiff competition from tech giants later on, it remains a recognized brand in the history of internet utility services.

The brand is currently under the ownership of System1, an omnichannel customer acquisition marketing platform based in the United States. System1 acquired the service from Verizon Media (formerly Oath) as part of a strategic alignment to integrate mapping data with their advertising technology. The service is primarily developed and maintained in the United States.
