The brand's history dates back to 1898 when it was founded as Westdeutsche Benzol-Verkaufs-Vereinigung. The name 'Aral' was introduced in 1924, derived from the chemical components of its benzene and gasoline fuel mixture: Aromatics and Aliphatics.

Today, Aral operates the largest network of filling stations in Germany, offering high-quality fuels, lubricants, and convenience services. While its roots are deeply German, its ownership shifted significantly in the early 2000s when it became a core part of a global energy portfolio. The brand continues to focus on innovation, including the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and sustainable fuel alternatives.

Since 2002, Aral has been a subsidiary of the British multinational energy company BP (formerly British Petroleum). This acquisition integrated Aral into one of the world's largest oil and gas companies, headquartered in London. Despite this international ownership, Aral maintains its unique brand identity and market-leading position within the German automotive landscape.
