The brand was founded in 1969 by Anthony Barker and his wife, Gillian, on their family farm in Geraldine, South Canterbury, New Zealand. The company began by creating fruit wines before expanding into the diverse range of syrups and preserves it is known for today.

While the Barker family maintained local control for decades, the brand is currently under the ultimate ownership of the Andros Group, a major French family-owned food processing company. Despite this international ownership, Barker's maintains a strong local presence, continuing to operate its primary manufacturing facility on the original family farm in Geraldine. This allows the brand to maintain its 'Made in New Zealand' identity while leveraging the global distribution and resource network of the Andros Group.
