The brand rose to significant fame in the 1980s following the introduction of the 'Hand Vac,' which became one of the best-selling handheld vacuum cleaners in history.

Over the decades, the ownership of the brand transitioned from its American roots to international conglomerates. In 2003, Dirt Devil was acquired by the Hong Kong-based company Techtronic Industries (TTI). This acquisition integrated the brand into a global portfolio that includes other high-profile tool and appliance brands, shifting the primary manufacturing focus to TTI's large-scale facilities in Asia, particularly China.

Today, Dirt Devil continues to operate as a subsidiary under TTI's Floor Care division. While the brand maintains a strong heritage of American engineering and design, its manufacturing and corporate strategic operations are managed out of Hong Kong, reflecting the modern globalized nature of the consumer electronics and home appliance industries.
