Opinel is a world-renowned French brand, best known for its iconic wooden-handled folding pocket knives. The company was founded by Joseph Opinel in 1890 in the village of Albiez-le-Vieux, near Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in the Savoie region of France. The brand has become a symbol of French cultural heritage, recognized globally for its minimalist design and functional reliability.

To this day, the vast majority of Opinel products are manufactured in Chambery, France. The brand remains deeply rooted in its original location, maintaining a commitment to traditional craftsmanship while incorporating modern production techniques. The wood used for the handles, primarily beechwood, is also largely sourced from sustainably managed French forests.

Opinel remains a family-owned business, currently under the leadership of the fourth generation of the Opinel family. Unlike many historic tool brands that have been acquired by large global conglomerates, Opinel SAS maintains its independence, ensuring that its production standards and brand legacy remain closely tied to its French origins.
